What do L and R mean in audio?

What do L and R mean in audio?

The L and R on the speakers represent the left channel and the right channel. They are the two most basic sound units of audio.

Sound Channel refers to independent audio signals that are collected or played back at different spatial locations during sound recording or playback. Therefore, the number of sound channels is also the number of sound sources during sound recording or the corresponding number of speakers during playback.

Speaker System (Speaker System) is the number of channels supported by the speaker. It is one of the important indicators to measure the grade of the speaker, from mono to the latest surround sound. Systems include mono, stereo, quasi-stereo, four-channel surround, 5.1-channel, etc.

  1. Mono

With the development of the times, it is increasingly difficult for mono sound systems to meet people’s higher and higher appreciation levels and requirements. Therefore, in addition to continuing to exert their remaining heat in the two traditional fields of wireless broadcasting and television mono sound, Mono sound systems have long been replaced by more superior stereo systems in other areas.
  2. Two-channel sound

The two-channel stereo system not only eliminates the keyhole effect of the mono system, but also compared with the mono system, the two-channel stereo system improves the sound quality, enhances the sense of presence, and reproduces the actual sound field. The spatial positioning of each sound source and many other aspects have been greatly improved. Therefore, stereo technology quickly gained popularity and development after it was recognized and accepted by people.
  3. Multi-channel

Although the sound quality and sound field effect of two-channel stereo are much better than that of mono, its limitations are also exposed in home theater applications. The two-channel stereo system can only reproduce the sense of space on a two-dimensional plane, that is, the entire sound field is placed flatly in front of us, and it cannot give us a sense of being in it.

Of course, since at the concert, the audience is originally sitting under the stage, while the band players are on the stage, the simple sense of sound field direction that stereo can reproduce is basically consistent with the sense of direction of a live concert. , so it can still meet the needs of appreciation. However, when watching a movie, the all-round three-dimensional sense of the overall sound field can undoubtedly give the audience a lively and immersive sense of presence. Therefore, multi-channel technology has also begun to develop.
